20 Jun 2011. The championship has not reached the half of the season, and yet the fight for the world title seems already limited to a private affair among the three Chevrolet drivers.
Rob Huff and Yvan Muller shared victories in Brno, while Alain Menu collected two third places. And yesterday’s races proved that now all will be up to the drivers’ nerves and capability of imposing their authority on the track. Which Huff did the best way for him when he checkmated Muller in three moves at the start of Sunday’s Race 1.
However the reigning champion proved he is not willing to abdicate and recovered from eighth on the grid to victory in Race 2. The gap between them is only 25 points, or a race win.
At the present moment Menu looks one step behind his team-mates, not only in terms of points (53 points from Huff). The Swiss racer is paying his standstills in the first races at Monza and Budapest.
Behind the Chevrolet cars the rest of the field is steadily improving. Tom Coronel fought tooth and nail to claim another podium result for BMW, while Michel Nykjær and Robert Dahlgren gave SUNRED and Volvo their best results so far with the new 1.6 –litre turbo engines.
The championship will resume at Porto, Portugal, on July 3rd for rounds 11 and 12.
